For energetic reasons, evaporators of plants
for the desalination of sea water are operated under vacuum. This vacuum is
generated by means of multiple-stage steam jet vacuum pumps. The particular
feature of designing these plants is the optimization of the energy consumption
and simultaneous minimization of the apparatus dimensions, as the investment
costs of these plants are decisively influenced by the use of high-quality
materials such as titanium, nickel bronze and special stainless steel. GEA Jet
Pumps GmbH, one of the leading suppliers of steam jet vacuum pumps, received a
large-scale order for four three-stage vacuum pumps with precondensers for a
plant for the desalination of sea water in Abu Dhabi in spring 1999. These
systems are now being delivered. In this way the company further strengthens
its market position in the Arab countries, in which more than 30 plants are
successfully operating.
